Hits at Last, Hits at Last
After their unsatisfying tryst with Motown, The Isleys set out to renew their T-Neck label as a subsidiary of Buddah records. they also revamped their lineup, adding younger brothers Ernie on guitar/drums and Marvin on bass. They also reworked their sound, focusing on tight-knit funk in Sly Stone style with the help of brother Ernie's smoking, Hendrix-style guitar.
The changes paid off, as they scored a hit and a Grammy in 1969 with It's Your Thing, reaching #1 on the Black Singles chart, and #2 on the Pop Singles chart.
Also released in 1969 was Was it Good to You, a rollicking, powerful piece of funk/soul from "The Brothers Isley" LP.
In 1970 they also added cousin Chris Jasper to the group, and continued down the heavy funk/rock road with Get Into Something.
The band had finally hit the pay dirt they'd been looking for, and would continue to chart through the 70s as they rode the waves of funk stylings.
Next installment: The last listenable Isley Brothers music, and a recap.
