What person have the Sex Pistols and Boy George BOTH covered?
...That would be Dave Berry, of Sheffield, England, and his band The Cruisers.
Today's song is a fantastically gritty little blues-based rockin' workout called "Don't Gimme No Lip Child", which you Sex Pistols fans may recognize as one of the sloppy Pistols outtakes which was used as padding on The Great Rock and Roll Swindle album.
Honestly.....this wipes the floor with that version, and makes it lick the mop-water up.
This is the flip side of a 1964 UK #5 single by Dave and his Cruisers. The A-side? His original version of "The Crying Game" , which Boy George took to the top ten worldwide [as the theme song to the movie of the same name]. Evidently, this 45 made quite the impression on some budding young musicians!
Dave went on to have a number of hits, amongst them the Ray Davies-penned "This Strange Effect" [further Pistols connection: this was also later covered by ex-Pistol Glen Matlock under the group moniker 'The Spectres', and was a UK hit to boot. ] Until last year, when it was used on a free CD with MOJO magazine, this song had never been released on CD, which is nothing short of criminal! This is taken from the original UK 45.
