Dwight

Blame the Vain

"Blame the Vain" is the title cut from Dwight Yoakam's 2005 release. It's a damn fine album, which is all the more impressive considering it's his first without long-time guitarist, co-writer and co-producer Pete Anderson. I forget the new guy's name, but his playing is liquid and assured without being flashy and his tone is absolutely perfect. I admit I wasn't sure Yoakam could do it without Anderson, yet he's released another great record.

Speaking of, here's a cut from "Tomorrow's Sounds Today." I know I flirt with heresy, but this may be Dwight's best record ever...yes, even better than "Guitars and Cadillacs" and "Hillbilly Deluxe." It's a hell of a record, and this is a hell of a song...a freewheeling and carefree outline of hard-won wisdom that just touches on disappointment and yearning.
